Potassium iodide is an inorganic compound that acts as a thyroid protectant and antithyroid agent. It saturates the thyroid gland with non-radioactive iodine, thereby inhibiting the thyroidal uptake and organification of radioiodine through competitive transport mechanisms and the transient Wolff-Chaikoff effect. This inhibition prevents radioiodine accumulation and protects thyroid tissue from radiation-induced cellular damage. [1]
