Phenytoin is a voltage-gated sodium channel stabilizer and blocker. By selectively binding to the inactivated state of voltage-gated sodium channels, it prevents repetitive high-frequency neuronal firing and reduces neuronal electrical conductance. This inhibition modulates action potential propagation without impairing normal low-frequency physiological signals, thereby suppressing hyper-excitable electrical activity in central nervous system cells.
