Nystatin is a polyene antifungal compound that targets membrane ergosterol in susceptible molds and yeasts, including Candida species. By binding directly to ergosterol within fungal cell membranes, it disrupts membrane integrity and increases cellular permeability, leading to leakage of essential intracellular contents and fungal cell death. This membrane disruption suppresses fungal proliferation and viable cell growth. [1]
