Metronidazole is a synthetic nitroimidazole antibiotic and antiprotozoal agent with selective activity against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. Following cellular uptake via passive diffusion, it undergoes non-enzymatic reduction by reacting with reduced ferredoxin generated by pyruvate:ferredoxin oxidoreductase. This reductive activation generates toxic nitro radical intermediates that cause DNA strand cleavage and inhibit nucleic acid synthesis, ultimately leading to pathogen cell death.

- Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
- Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
- For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
- Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
