Biological Activity

Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic that targets the 50S ribosomal subunit. It selectively binds to the 23S rRNA within the peptidyl transferase center of bacterial ribosomes, effectively blocking peptidyl transferase activity. By preventing peptide bond formation during translation, chloramphenicol inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, leading to the arrest of bacterial cell growth across a wide range of Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and anaerobic microorganisms. FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
