Biological Activity

Amantadine HCl is an inhibitor of the influenza A virus M2 proton channel and an uncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist. By blocking the viral M2 ion channel, it impairs viral uncoating and viral replication within host cells. Additionally, antagonism of NMDA receptors modulates glutamatergic signaling and enhances dopamine release, contributing to its therapeutic effects in neurodegenerative models. [1][2]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
