Biological Activity

5'-Deoxy-5'-(methylthio)adenosine (Methylthioadenosine) is a naturally occurring sulfur-containing nucleoside that acts as an agonist for adenosine receptors, including A1, A2A, A2B, and A3 receptors. It regulates polyamine biosynthesis and transmethylation reactions, impacting downstream cell signaling cascades such as the MAPK and NF-kB pathways. Through these targeted mechanisms, methylthioadenosine modulates cellular responses by inhibiting cell proliferation, suppressing inflammatory signaling, and promoting apoptosis in diverse cell types. FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
