6.3 Methods and materials for containment and cleaning up
ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES: Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures: Use personal protective equipment. Avoid dust formation. Avoid breathing vapors, mist or gas. Ensure adequate ventilation. Avoid breathing dust. Environmental precautions: Do not let product enter drains. Methods and materials for containment and cleaning up: Pick up and arrange disposal without creating dust. Sweep up and shovel. Keep in suitable, closed containers for disposal.
SRP: Recycle any unused portion of the material for its approved use or return it to the manufacturer or supplier. Ultimate disposal of the chemical must consider: the material's impact on air quality; potential migration in air, soil or water; effects on animal, aquatic and plant life; and conformance with environmental and public health regulations. If it is possible or reasonable use an alternative chemical product with less inherent propensity for occupational harm/injury/toxicity or environmental contamination.
Product: Offer surplus and non-recyclable solutions to a licensed disposal company; Contaminated packaging: Dispose of as unused product.
ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES: Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures: Use personal protective equipment. Avoid dust formation. Avoid breathing vapors, mist or gas. Ensure adequate ventilation. Avoid breathing dust. Environmental precautions: Do not let product enter drains.
Precautions for safe handling: Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid formation of dust and aerosols. Further processing of solid materials may result in the formation of combustible dusts. The potential for combustible dust formation should be taken into consideration before additional processing occurs. Provide appropriate exhaust ventilation at places where dust is formed.
Appropriate engineering controls: Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Wash hands before breaks and at the end of workday.
Gloves must be inspected prior to use. Use proper glove removal technique (without touching glove's outer surface) to avoid skin contact with this product. Dispose of contaminated gloves after use in accordance with applicable laws and good laboratory practices. Wash and dry hands.
SRP: Local exhaust ventilation should be applied wherever there is an incidence of point source emissions or dispersion of regulated contaminants in the work area. Ventilation control of the contaminant as close to its point of generation is both the most economical and safest method to minimize personnel exposure to airborne contaminants. Ensure that the local ventilation moves the contaminant away from the worker.

12.1 Toxicity
Dimethylhydroxy furanone's production and use in the flavoring of foods, including pineapple and strawberry flavors, and use as a cigarette additive may result in its release to the environment through various waste streams(SRC). Dimethylhydroxy furanone has been isolated from many different fresh fruits such as pineapple, strawberry, raspberry, tomato, kiwi, lychee, and snake fruit. If released to air, an estimated vapor pressure of 0.008 mm Hg at 25 °C indicates dimethylhydroxy furanone will exist solely as a vapor in the atmosphere. Vapor-phase dimethylhydroxy furanone will be degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals and reaction with ozone; the half-lives for these reactions in air is estimated to be 3 and 5 hours respectively. Dimethylhydroxy furanone contains chromophores that absorb at wavelengths >290 nm and, therefore, may be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight. If released to soil, dimethylhydroxy furanone is expected to have very high mobility based upon an estimated Koc of 1. Volatilization from moist soil surfaces is expected to be an important fate process based upon an estimated Henry's Law constant of 1.5X10-5 atm-cu m/mole. Dimethylhydroxy furanone is not expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces based upon its vapor pressure, however, it emits an odor even though it exists as a solid. Biodegradation data in soil and water were not available. If released into water, dimethylhydroxy furanone is not exp
