Elamipretide (SS-31) is a mitochondria-targeted peptide and cardiolipin peroxidase inhibitor. By selectively binding cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane, it inhibits cardiolipin peroxidase activity and prevents cardiolipin peroxidation. This action suppresses mitochondrial reactive oxygen species generation, preserves cristae architecture, and maintains ATP synthesis, thereby mitigating mitochondrial dysfunction and reducing oxidative cell damage in pathological models.
