Vigabatrin (γ-Vinyl-GABA) is an orally active, irreversible inhibitor of GABA transaminase (GABA-T), the key enzyme responsible for the catabolism of γ-aminobutyric acid. By selectively blocking GABA breakdown, it significantly increases brain GABA levels and enhances inhibitory neurotransmission. This potentiation of GABAergic tone attenuates central neuronal hyperexcitability, thereby conferring broad-spectrum antiepileptic activity and effective seizure control. [1]
