Biological Activity

Vancomycin HCl is a narrow-spectrum glycopeptide antibiotic that targets Gram-positive bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan synthesis. It inhibits bacterial cell wall biosynthesis by binding to D-alanyl-D-alanine termini of cell wall peptidoglycan precursors, thereby preventing the incorporation of N-acetylmuramic acid and N-acetylglucosamine peptide subunits into the peptidoglycan matrix. This disruption impairs cell wall integrity and leads to bacterial cell lysis. [1]

Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
