Biological Activity

Trimethylamine N-oxide dihydrate (TMAO dihydrate) is an organic osmolyte and protein stabilizer that counteracts the destabilizing effects of urea on protein structure. As a naturally occurring gut microbiota-derived metabolite, TMAO promotes protein folding and structural stability by enhancing hydrophobic interactions and altering peptide backbone hydration. Elevated TMAO levels influence cellular stress responses and promote pro-inflammatory signal transduction pathways, contributing to vascular dysfunction and cardiovascular pathogenesis. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
