Biological Activity
Transferrin is an iron-transport glycoprotein that specifically binds ferric ions (Fe³⁺) to form a stable transport complex. Upon binding cell-surface transferrin receptors (CD71), the receptor-ligand complex undergoes endocytosis to deliver essential iron into cells. This process regulates systemic iron homeostasis, supports cellular proliferation, and prevents apoptosis caused by iron deprivation. [1][2]
