Biological Activity

Tetrahydrocurcumin is a major active metabolite of curcumin that functions as an antioxidant and acts as an inhibitor of cytochrome P450 enzymes, including CYP2C9 and CYP3A4. It effectively attenuates oxidative stress by scavenging reactive oxygen species and reducing lipid peroxidation. Downstream, tetrahydrocurcumin protects against cellular damage, exhibiting significant cardioprotective and anti-inflammatory activity by suppressing pro-inflammatory cascades. [1][2]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
