Biological Activity

Terfenadine is an H1 histamine receptor antagonist and a potent open-channel blocker of human ether-a-go-go-related gene (hERG) channels. By modulating intracellular calcium homeostasis, terfenadine triggers ROS-dependent apoptosis in melanoma cells. This activation of apoptotic pathways simultaneously engages caspase-4, caspase-2, and caspase-9 downstream, leading to suppressed cell proliferation and enhanced programmed cell death. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
