Biological Activity

Sudan I is a synthetic azo dye and xenobiotic compound that undergoes bioactivation catalyzed by cytochrome P450 enzymes, particularly CYP1A1 and CYP1A2, as well as peroxidases. Metabolism of Sudan I generates reactive electrophilic intermediates, leading to covalent DNA adduct formation, oxidative stress, and mutagenicity. These downstream events disrupt genomic integrity and trigger oncogenic signaling pathways, ultimately contributing to tumorigenesis in hepatic and urinary bladder tissues.

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
