Streptomycin sulfate is an aminoglycoside antibiotic and protein synthesis inhibitor that targets the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit. By binding to the S12 protein within the 30S subunit, it interferes with formyl-methionyl-tRNA binding and induces translational misreading, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis initiation. This disruption of bacterial ribosome function produces broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. [1]
