Biological Activity

Spectinomycin dihydrochloride pentahydrate is an aminocyclitol antibiotic that acts as a bacterial protein synthesis inhibitor by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. By binding to helix 34 of 16S rRNA, it disrupts ribosomal translocation of messenger RNA and transfer RNAs. This impairment of translation elongation inhibits bacterial cell growth across a broad spectrum of Gram-negative and Gram-positive pathogens. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
