Biological Activity

Sodium thiocyanate (NaSCN) is a precursor of the thiocyanate anion that acts as an antioxidant and immune modulator. It reduces intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and attenuates oxidative stress. Furthermore, sodium thiocyanate modulates inflammatory cytokine production by decreasing interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels while promoting interleukin-10 (IL-10) expression, thereby exerting protective anti-inflammatory actions across cellular systems. FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
