Biological Activity

Sodium propionate is a short-chain fatty acid salt that acts as an agonist of free fatty acid receptor 2 (FFAR2/GPR43) and free fatty acid receptor 3 (FFAR3/GPR41). Receptor activation modulates intracellular signaling pathways to suppress systemic immune responses and decrease inflammatory cytokine production, leading to anti-inflammatory effects in cellular and animal models.
