Biological Activity

Sodium palmitate is a long-chain saturated fatty acid involved in lipid metabolism and fatty acid synthesis. It enhances cellular steatosis and lipogenesis in various cell lines. Sodium palmitate activates glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β) signaling, inducing c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) phosphorylation and Bax upregulation. Furthermore, it elevates reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, leading to intracellular lipid accumulation, impaired cell viability, and lipoapoptosis in hepatocytes.[1][2]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
