Sodium L-lactate is an endogenous metabolic substrate and selective agonist of hydroxycarboxylic acid receptor 1 (HCAR1/GPR81). Activation of HCAR1 by L-lactate suppresses intracellular cyclic AMP production and inhibits lipolysis in adipose tissue. Additionally, L-lactate functions as a key intermediate in cellular energy metabolism and monocarboxylate transporter-mediated signaling, modulating metabolic homeostasis and cell proliferation in various physiological and pathophysiological contexts.
