Biological Activity

Sodium carbonate is an inorganic disodium salt of carbonic acid that functions as an alkalinizing agent and pH regulator in biological systems. It dissolves in aqueous solution to yield sodium and carbonate ions, which react with hydrogen ions to neutralize acidity and elevate systemic or local pH. This buffering mechanism modulates intracellular and extracellular acid-base homeostasis, altering proton gradients and pH-dependent cellular pathways. [1][2]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
