Selenomethionine is a naturally occurring selenium-containing amino acid that non-specifically substitutes for methionine during protein synthesis. Incorporation of selenomethionine alters protein redox properties, disrupting intracellular redox homeostasis and affecting essential cellular functions. Downstream consequences include activation of the p53 signaling pathway and induction of cell cycle arrest or oxidative stress responses in target cells. [1]
