(S)-2-Hydroxysuccinic acid (L-Malic acid) is a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid and a key metabolic intermediate in the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. It is reversibly oxidized to oxaloacetate by malate dehydrogenase with the concomitant reduction of NAD+ to NADH, thereby fueling oxidative phosphorylation and ATP production. Furthermore, L-malate participates in the malate-aspartate shuttle to transport reducing equivalents across the inner mitochondrial membrane, supporting cellular energy homeostasis. [1]

Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
- Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
- Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
- For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
- Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
