Biological Activity

(S)-2-Hydroxy-3-phenylpropanoic acid (L-phenyllactic acid) is a naturally occurring organic acid metabolite produced by lactic acid bacteria that functions as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent. It inhibits the growth of diverse bacterial and fungal pathogens by disrupting cell membrane integrity and interfering with cellular metabolism. Downstream effects include reduced microbial colonization, suppressed fungal spore germination, and enhanced preservation in food and pharmaceutical applications. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
