Biological Activity
Ruthenium Red is a polycationic inorganic dye and ion channel inhibitor that blocks L-type calcium currents (ICa) and the mitochondrial calcium uniporter (MCU) complex [1][2]. By inhibiting calcium influx through voltage-gated L-type calcium channels and mitochondrial membrane transporters, it attenuates intracellular calcium overload, modulates calcium-dependent signaling pathways, and prevents mitochondrial calcium accumulation and subsequent apoptosis.[1][2]
