Retinyl propionate is a retinoic acid receptor (RAR) pathway precursor and synthetic retinoid ester of retinol. Upon intracellular uptake, it undergoes enzymatic conversion to active retinoic acid, which binds nuclear retinoic acid receptors to modulate transcriptional programs governing cell differentiation and tissue remodeling. Downstream activation of the RAR signaling axis regulates epidermal cell proliferation and collagen matrix homeostasis. [1]
