Biological Activity
Reserpine hydrochloride is a potent inhibitor of vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) that disrupts the vesicular storage of neurotransmitters. By blocking VMAT2 activity, it depletes monoamines, including dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin, from nerve terminals. This inhibition impairs neurotransmitter packaging and synaptic transmission, leading to central nervous system depression. Consequently, reserpine hydrochloride is widely utilized as a pharmacological agent to generate animal models of depression and evaluate monoaminergic signaling pathways. [1]

Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
- Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
- Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
- For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
- Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
