Biological Activity

Quinine dihydrochloride is an antiparasitic agent and Slo3 (KCa5.1) potassium channel inhibitor that targets mammalian sperm potassium conductance (KSper). By binding to hydrophobic side chains within the intracellular pore region of the Slo3 channel, it blocks potassium ion efflux, disrupting membrane hyperpolarization and sperm motility. Additionally, it exhibits antimalarial activity against Plasmodium species by interfering with parasitic hemoglobin degradation and intraerythrocytic development. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
