Pyocyanin is a redox-active phenazine toxin produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa that generates intracellular oxidative stress through reactive oxygen species formation. It disrupts cellular redox equilibrium and mitochondrial respiration, leading to downstream oxidative cell damage and apoptosis. Additionally, pyocyanin exerts selective toxicity against quorum sensing-defective mutants, serving as a social policing agent that promotes the survival of quorum sensing-proficient bacterial populations.
