PIPES (1,4-piperazinediethanesulfonic acid) is a zwitterionic biological buffer used in biochemical research to maintain physiological pH. In combination with aldehyde fixatives like glutaraldehyde and formaldehyde, PIPES buffer enables effective fixation and structural preservation of fungal zoospores. This optimal buffer system minimizes nonspecific background fluorescence while preserving cellular ultrastructure, facilitating accurate lectin binding and immunocytochemical probing for fluorescence and electron microscopy analysis.[1][2]
