p-Aminophenylmercuric acetate (APMA) is an organomercurial compound that acts as a broad-spectrum activator of latent matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), including MMP-8. It operates by disrupting the cysteine-switch mechanism, exposing the catalytic site to convert zymogens into active enzymes. Downstream activation of MMP pathways promotes extracellular matrix remodeling, pro-betacellulin shedding, and modulation of opiate receptor ligand binding. [1]
