Biological Activity

6-OHDA (Oxidopamine hydrobromide) is a neurotoxic organic compound that targets catecholaminergic systems and acts as a dopamine antagonist. It selectively accumulates in dopaminergic neurons via membrane transporters, inducing reactive oxygen species production, mitochondrial dysfunction, and apoptotic cell death. This targeted neurotoxicity leads to the degeneration of nigrostriatal dopaminergic pathways, enabling its widespread use to establish animal models of Parkinson's disease. [1][2]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
