Biological Activity
Oligomycin is a macrolide antibiotic and inhibitor of mitochondrial F0 subunit H+-ATP synthase. By targeting the F0 sector of the F0F1-ATP synthase complex, it disrupts mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation and cellular ATP production. Inhibition of this F0 component suppresses tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-induced mitochondrial permeability transition pore opening, preventing cytochrome c release and downstream apoptotic cell death.
