Biological Activity

Description Nisin (Ambicin N) is a ribosomally synthesized peptide that has broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, including activity against many bacteria that are food-spoilage pathogens.
In vitro

Nisin induces preferential apoptosis, cell cycle arrest, and reduces cell proliferation in HNSCC (head and neck squamous cell carcinoma) cells, compared with primary keratinocytes. Nisin acts by altering the integrity of the cellular membrane and forming short-lived pores, thereby changing the membrane potential. Nisin becomes immersed in the cell membrane through the cationic portions of the amino acids extending to one side of the molecule[1]. Nisin is a posttransitionally modified peptide[2].

In vivo Nisin reduces HNSCC (head and neck squamous cell carcinoma) tumorigenesis in vivo[1].

  • Concentrations: 80 μg/mL
  • Incubation Time: 24 h
  • Method:

    Cells are plated in six-well culture plates overnight and treated with different concentrations of nisin for 24 h. Following this incubation period, the cells are lysed and assayed. DNA fragmentation is evaluated by spectrophotometric analysis of samples within microtiter plates using a plate reader set at 405 nm, and the values are plotted as absorbance units.
