Monoethyl malonic acid is an organic acid derivative and a major urinary metabolite of ethyl 3-ethoxypropionate (EEP). EEP is widely used as an industrial solvent, and its biotransformation produces monoethyl malonic acid as a primary elimination product following carboxylesterase-mediated hydrolysis and oxidation pathways. Identification and measurement of monoethyl malonic acid in biological fluids serve as a critical biomarker for assessing occupational exposure and metabolic clearance of EEP. [1]

Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
- Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
- Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
- For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
- Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
