Biological Activity

(+)-Dizocilpine (MK 801) Maleate is a potent, selective, and non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonist with a Kd of 37.2 nM in rat brain membranes. By blocking NMDA receptor-mediated ion flux, it inhibits glutamate-driven neurotransmission and downstream calcium signaling pathways. This pharmacological inhibition induces behavioral phenotypes relevant to cognitive deficits, rendering it a widely used tool to establish animal models of schizophrenia. [1]

Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
