Biological Activity

MitoSOX Red is a cell-permeable fluorogenic probe designed for the selective detection of mitochondrial superoxide in living cells. Driven by its triphenylphosphonium moiety, MitoSOX Red accumulates in the mitochondrial matrix where it undergoes oxidation by superoxide to yield fluorescent products. In live cardiac myocytes and endothelial cells, MitoSOX Red detects a 3-7 fold increase in mitochondrial superoxide generation triggered by oxidative stressors, enabling the monitoring of mitochondrial redox status and ROS signaling pathways. FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
