Biological Activity

Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin E1 analog that acts as an agonist of EP prostanoid receptors, including EP2, EP3, and EP4. Activation of EP receptors modulates adenylate cyclase activity and intracellular cAMP levels, triggering downstream signaling pathways that promote gastric mucosal protection via increased mucus and bicarbonate secretion. In reproductive tissues, misoprostol-induced signaling stimulates uterine smooth muscle contraction and cervical ripening, facilitating its use in spontaneous abortion models. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
