Biological Activity

Methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (Methylparaben) is a widely used antifungal and antimicrobial agent that serves as a preservative in food and personal-care products. It exerts antifungal activity by disrupting cell membrane integrity, altering membrane transport mechanisms, and inhibiting cellular respiration in fungi. In mammalian systems, methylparaben also demonstrates weak estrogenic activity by binding to estrogen receptors, modulating downstream estrogenic signaling and gene transcription. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
