Merafloxacin (CI- is a fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent that acts as an inhibitor of -1 programmed ribosomal frameshifting (-1 PRF) in SARS-CoV-2 and other betacoronaviruses. By targeting the viral RNA pseudoknot structure responsible for frameshift stimulation, it disrupts frameshifting efficiency required for viral open reading frame 1b translation. Consequently, inhibition of this ribosomal mechanism impairs viral polyprotein synthesis and suppresses SARS-CoV-2 replication in host cells. [1]

Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
- Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
- Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
- For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
- Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
