Biological Activity

Medetomidine HCl is a highly selective α2-adrenoceptor agonist with a Ki of 1.08 nM, exhibiting 1620-fold selectivity over the α1-adrenoceptor. Activation of α2-adrenoceptors inhibits adenylate cyclase, resulting in decreased intracellular cAMP levels and reduced presynaptic norepinephrine release. This inhibition impairs central sympathetic output, leading to potent sedative, hypnotic, and analgesic phenotypes in preclinical models. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
