5.1 Extinguishing media
Suitable: Water spray, dry chemical, carbon dioxide (CO2), alcohol-resistant foam.
Unsuitable: None known.
5.2 Specific hazards arising from the substance or mixture
As in any fire, wear self-contained breathing apparatus pressure-demand (MSHA-NIOSH approved or equivalent), and full protective gear to prevent contact with skin and eyes.
Use alcohol-resistant foam, carbon dioxide, water, or dry chemical spray when fighting fires involving this material.
5.3 Advice for firefighters
Wear self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and full protective clothing.
Fight fire from upwind. Cool containers with water spray until fire is extinguished.
6.1 Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures
Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (see Section 8).
Avoid breathing dust/vapor. Ensure adequate ventilation.
Evacuate personnel to safe areas. Keep people away from and upwind of spill.
6.2 Environmental precautions
Prevent product from entering drains, waterways, or soil.
Contain spill with inert absorbent material.
6.3 Methods and materials for containment and cleaning up
Steps to be taken in case material is released or spilled: Wear a NIOSH/MSHA approved self-contained breathing apparatus and appropriate personal protection (rubber boots, safety goggles, and heavy rubber gloves). Vacuum or sweep up material and place in disposal container. Avoid breathing dust. After removal, ventilate contaminated area and flush thoroughly with water.
SRP: Criteria for land treatment or burial (sanitary landfill) disposal practices are subject to significant revision. Prior to implementing land disposal of waste residue (including waste sludge), consult with environmental regulatory agencies for guidance on acceptable disposal practices.
SRP: Wastewater from contaminant suppression, cleaning of protective clothing/equipment, or contaminated sites should be contained and evaluated for subject chemical or decomposition product concentrations. Concentrations shall be lower than applicable environmental discharge or disposal criteria. Alternatively, pretreatment and/or discharge to a permitted wastewater treatment facility is acceptable only after review by the governing authority and assurance that "pass through" violations will not occur. Due consideration shall be given to remediation worker exposure (inhalation, dermal and ingestion) as well as fate during treatment, transfer and disposal. If it is not practicable to manage the chemical in this fashion, it must be evaluated in accordance with EPA 40 CFR Part 261, specifically Subpart B, in order to determine the appropriate local, state and federal requirements for disposal.
Wash thoroughly after handling.
SRP: Contaminated protective clothing should be segregated in such a manner so that there is no direct personal contact by personnel who handle, dispose, or clean the clothing. The completeness of the cleaning procedures should be considered before the decontaminated protective clothing is returned for reuse by the workers. Contaminated clothing should not be taken home at the end of shift, but should remain at employee's place of work for cleaning.
7.1 Precautions for safe handling
Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practices.
Wear appropriate PPE (see Section 8). Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothing.
Wash hands thoroughly after handling. Do not eat, drink, or smoke in work area.
Avoid dust formation. Use only in a chemical fume hood or well-ventilated area.
7.2 Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area. Keep container tightly closed.
Store away from incompatible materials (see Section 10).
Protect from light and moisture.
Recommended storage (industry convention for research compounds): -20°C for long-term storage; 2-8°C for short-term use and transport.
[Note: This is a general industry recommendation. Always verify exact storage conditions with the supplier Certificate of Analysis (COA).]

12.1 Toxicity
Maslinic acid's production and use as a dietary supplement and as an ingredient in consumer products such as olive oil and skin care lotion products may result in its release to the environment through various waste streams. Maslinic acid is found in a number of natural sources, most notably pomace olive oil, and other plants such as red dates, camellia, pomegranate and sage. If released to air, an estimated vapor pressure of 2.3X10-15 mm Hg at 25 °C indicates maslinic acid will exist solely in the particulate phase in the atmosphere. Particulate-phase maslinic acid will be removed from the atmosphere by wet and dry deposition. If released to soil, maslinic acid is expected to have low mobility based upon an estimated Koc of 1760. The pKa of maslinic acid is 4.81, indicating that this compound will exist partially in anion form in the environment and anions generally do not adsorb more strongly to soils containing organic carbon and clay than their neutral counterparts. Volatilization from moist soil surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process based upon an estimated Henry's Law constant of 3.5X10-11 atm-cu m/mole. Maslinic acid is not expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces based upon its vapor pressure. Biodegradation data in soil or water were not available. If released into water, maslinic acid is expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment based upon the estimated Koc. Volatilization from water surfaces is not expected to be an important fate p
