Biological Activity

Leucylleucine methyl ester is a lysosomotropic agent that is taken up into leukocyte lysosomes via a dipeptide-specific transport system. Inside lysosomes, it is cleaved by dipeptidyl peptidase I (cathepsin C) into hydrophobic oligomers that disrupt intracellular organelle membranes. This lysosomal membrane permeabilization triggers apoptotic cell death, selectively eliminating cytotoxic T lymphocytes and natural killer cells while sparing helper T cells. ^[1][2]
