Biological Activity

L-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate calcium is a biologically active form of folate that serves as an essential cofactor and primary methyl donor in one-carbon metabolism. It participates in the remethylation of homocysteine to methionine via methionine synthase, supporting downstream DNA synthesis, repair, and epigenetic methylation pathways. This folate derivative directly bypasses enzymatic reduction steps required by synthetic folic acid, contributing to cellular nucleotide biosynthesis and amino acid homeostasis. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
