Kainic acid is a natural neuroexcitatory compound that acts as a potent agonist for ionotropic glutamate receptors, specifically AMPA and kainate receptor subtypes. Stimulation of these receptors induces severe excitotoxicity by promoting excessive intracellular Ca2+ influx, triggering reactive oxygen species production, mitochondrial dysfunction, and inflammatory glial responses that ultimately lead to selective apoptotic and necrotic neuronal cell death.
