Biological Activity

Iron (III) hexacyanoferrate (II) (Prussian blue) is an inorganic metal-organic framework compound that functions as a selective sorbent and decorporation agent for monovalent and divalent heavy metal cations. It operates through cation exchange within its crystal lattice, trapping metal ions such as cesium, thallium, copper, cobalt, nickel, and lead in aqueous environments and the gastrointestinal tract. This binding interrupts enterohepatic circulation, prevents systemic reabsorption, and enhances heavy metal excretion, thereby mitigating toxic metal accumulation and radiation-induced cellular damage.

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
