Ifenprodil is a selective antagonist of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors that specifically targets those containing the NR2B (GluN2B) subunit. By selectively blocking NR2B-containing NMDA receptors, it inhibits glutamate-induced intracellular calcium influx and attenuates excitotoxic neuronal injury. This selective inhibition modulates downstream glutamatergic signaling pathways without broadly disrupting general NMDA receptor function, demonstrating neuroprotective activity in various models of neurological disease. Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
- Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
- Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
- For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
- Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
