Hypotaurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid derivative and metabolic precursor in taurine biosynthesis that functions as an endogenous antioxidant. It directly scavenges reactive oxygen species, including hydroxyl radicals and hypochlorous acid, thereby limiting cytotoxic oxidative burden. By neutralizing these reactive species, hypotaurine inhibits downstream lipid peroxidation pathways and protects cellular membranes against oxidative stress-induced injury. [1][2]
